Aren't computers wonderful? I came in to work today and most of the network was unreachable. My W2K machine had to be updated to a new DNS address. No one was notified. All I knew was that one of the servers was being upgraded. For some reason the old NT machine was still not working after the change. Eventually I found out the network drives I had mapped were failing to connect because of some cached data used to login. Once I deleted the drive map and re-created it all was ok. Now it's time to get back to work. It must be Monday!!

Back to Spam and all those unwanted emails. I very foolishly responded to the unsubscribe link on a couple of emails. Within two months that account was getting 20-30 pieces of junk per day. I no longer use that account and have learned my lesson. I investigated a lot of the Spam filtering software but I've always come back the a little gem called Email Remover V2.4. This little program is so easy to set up. What I do is each time I want to check my mail, in one of my four main accounts that I use, I fire up this program and use it to highlight the pieces of mail I don't want to bother with. When though I click on the delete button and all the highlighted mail is deleted. I then fire up my mail program and download. I know, many will say, just set up a filter and let this junk go to trash or junk folder. It tried this but I found there was always pieces that got through the filter, requiring a new filter or some other action. I also get a little curious. Every time mail went into the junk folder, I had to check to make sure it was junk. Now I don't worry about filters. I click on the obvious junk, and if I have a question about a piece of mail, I can right click on it and download the header for viewing, or the whole piece of email, if I really can't decide. Now I've gotten so used to this it takes one or two minutes, and I've cleaned all the junk. Try this great piece of freeware.

Another super busy day. Wish I had time to think of something worthwhile to put here. Sorry. Hope to tomorrow.

Does anyone really use Hotmail or Yahoo as their main mail accounts any more? I have used both in the past and still have accounts with them. I never use them anymore but I occasionally check in just to keep them active. Don't ask me why. I guess I'm just a* retentive. I don't like to give up even when it's obvious that I should.
It is incredible the amount of SPAM and just plain junk that these accounts accumulate. In both accounts I turned on the SPAM filters, to the highest level under exclusive. It has filled up the bulk mail folders but the amount of mail that still gets trough to the inbox is amazing.
I really think that Microsoft and Yahoo email service is a thing of the past. I really think that anyone who really uses email on a regular basis has given up on these two long ago.

Well, I was just notified that I had become a member of BlogCanada. I don't really have a lot of overt Canadian stuff on this site but I am a proud Canadian and the thought of being in this ring was very comforting somehow.
I will try to setup the proper link bar today. I was playing with the java script but I think I will go with the HTML. Hope this doesn't mess up my page too much while I'm playing. Apologies in advance to anyone affected.
Just received another notice from a former registrar. My service will be discontinued in one week unless I act now! I don't think so. At least not by them!

I can get to my site again, no problem. It was scheduled downtime. At the web site there is a list of scheduled maintenance times. Guess I should look there occasionally. It would have been much better to have advance notice via email. Why couldn't they do that? I guess it would be time consuming. These domain registers seem to be very sloppy. I moved my site a while ago and for the last few months I have been getting renewal notices for the old register saying my site will be unusable unless I pay up. Why didn't they remove me when the transfer took place? Do they think I will pay up again? I imagine quite a few people get very upset and confused by this practice. I have also gotten renewal notices via snail mail to renew my site. I don't know who these people are but they want 3 times the price I'm paying. This is a real scam. Again I'm sure it must be effective to skim a small percentage of the people. It would work on my mother!

I can't reach my web site. How very disturbing. I find that so distressing. I guess the DNS at ENOM are out of order. I used them to register and so far this is the first time I have had any troube. I was very pleased with their service and the last 9 months have been trouble free. I'll have to see what they say when service is resumed. I do hope this is an isolated problem.

What a busy day! Haven't had time to think of blogging anything worthwhile today. Trying to do too much at once I think. Have to learn how to slow down, or maybe I just need a course on time management. Probably both. Oh well, only two more days till the weekend. I think 'no plans' is just what is needed!

I really wonder how copyright laws are going to survive in this day and age. I have been using kazalite (the spyware free version of KaZa) and also WinMX recently. I started out with Napster but they were shut down. Then several others, like ArtistDirect, came along. They were stopped too. But as soon as they were under attack new ones like KaZa and WinMX show up. Until some form of copy protection is agreed upon there is no way authorities are going to stop this. Everything imaginable is out there. I tried as an experiment, going into HMV and looking at two newly released albums. I then went on-line and I found everything on these two albums, freely available for downloading. What a temptation!

My old Iomega ZIP decided to join the "Click of Death" brigade. Guess I'll have to give up on that one now. I don't use the ZIP at home much since I got my CD R/W and can save so much more. However between the office, where I have plain old CD, and home I've been using the ZIP to carry data back and forth. I'll have to find some other way to do this now. The drive seems able to write small files but anything over 10 meg. Is giving it fits.
Guess it wasn't my weekend. Or was it just a delayed Friday the 13th? I ruined two blank CD's when the recording program decided to die in the middle of writing. I'm still using the free one that came with the computer Probably should upgrade to the full version. But I really wonder if it is worth the money.

I've been using Yankee Clipper for a long time and couldn't survive without it. It's the best (in my opinion) freeware clipboard enhancer there is. The current version is Yankee Clipper III but the prior, smaller (but still feature rich) version is still available for downloading too. It has worked on all versions of windows I have owned and always flawlessly. It handles pictures, URL's, Richtext, etc., of any size, without getting in the way. I love being able to scroll through all my cuts and with a simple click I can get at any of them.
Enough gushing. Now I see from the web site the notice "The popularity of this program is driving us to the poorhouse". They are looking for volunteer mirror sites. Can anyone help? If you, or anyone you know can help, why not contact them.

It is incredible the amount of tributes, poems, gif's, and personal moments about the 11th are out on the web. The Internet really became a memorial of its own yesterday. Since I only surf over the English part of the web, I was wondering how much of the non-English part had tributes as well. I imagine it was the same but if anyone has a different view speak up!
I didn't turn on the TV, and decided to surf the evening, and was really moved by many of the weblogs I visited. There were too many good ones to start listing them here. I now wish I had marked down a couple I had randomly surfed to using Wander-Lust.

I work in a "windows" universe so most of my day to day activities and interests are on that topic. On that vein I thought that anyone who used to read WINMAG, and misses some of the columnists, should check out some of the web sites set up after the demise. Most avid fans will already know this, but for some who don't and others who never looked at the magazine, I thought it was worth noting.
I quite regularly read Win2K Power Users", Scctt's Newsletter and Jason's Tool Box. If you go to any of these sites you can find links to others with good info by former WINMAG columnists.

I'm already nine elevened out. It's still two days away but the constant deluge in all media is getting too much. I'm very sorry that such a thing could have occurred and I understand that the day can not be forgotten but can't we have something fitting?
I got to see the Toronto Star on Sunday and they had an article that gave some credence to my feelings. Lewis Lapham, editor of Harper's, is quoted with a headline "A resistance to the disease of thought". They are just turning it into a circus and will soon have a holiday where everyone will go shopping for the 9-11 sales.

The Star also had some statistics. Sources at their web site under "How insular is America?". A few here to point out why they have major problems:

Percentage of Americans who believe the US is viewed favorably in the eyes of the world:
79%
Number of hours dedicated to Canadian news on American networks evening news from 1990-1999:
Fewer then 12
Number of countries that received less then one hour of coverage during the same period:
132
Number of countries that received 0 minutes during that period:
41

Just got off the phone to a very nice lady. She confirmed that buying $25.00 gives you free shipping. She also confirmed that the order could be sent regualr post and not by courier if desired. I asked her why I was asked to pay shipping on the web site and why the post office was not offered as a choice? She said, "Oh, I don't know anything about the web site. That's done by another company. If there are any special offers there, I don't know what they are. Why bother having a order ability on the web site if it is so disconnected from the business. They have a regular phone number and an 800 number. The lady knew her stock and the business rules. The web site was a major turn off. It would have been better to have one page with the phone numbers. Get with it businesses!!!!

I can't understand why companies can't do business on the Internet. I wanted to buy some ginseng. I know, from a brochure I have, and from past purchases, that they include shipping if the order is over $25.00. I entered all my info on their site and set up my shopping cart, with an order over this amount, and when I go to checkout they want to add $13.15 as the cost of shipping!!! Because I place an order over the Internet it costs them more to ship? I will have to take time tomorrow and phone in my order. I wonder how their customers feel when they get an order and see from the enclosed literature that the shipping should have been included.

I have a grudging admiration for all those people who write their blogs day in a day out with paragraph after paragraph of text. I don't know what possess them to spew out so much. I suppose that I have an inferiority complex because I can't seem to compete with them. But then I think, do I really want to compete with them? I've never been very competitive. I guess that from being very content with thing the way things are. I have never been one to comment on things. I observe, and think to myself what a great thing, or what a stupid thing. I never come out and say either. I like to be one that blends into the masses. It's comforting to me.

I 'm not sure the Enetation is working very well. The server always seems to be down.

Four whole days with no computer. I really didn't mind that much. It was a beautiful four days weather wise. Got to see my family and a little bit of the countryside. In the northeast the trees are all still green and full of leaves, even despite the lack of moisture we have generally had. Last year at this time we took the same trip and all the trees were full colours. Fall came early last year. Well, now it's back to the grindstone. I have to pick up where I left off and continue to learn Linux while supporting a full stable if CICS systems on the mainframe.
