On the last day of 2002, I reflect on how little use my life has been put to. I've given money to charity, I've put in a full year of effort at work. I've tried to be a good and useful citizen of the world. However, looking back, all I feel is regret that I have not done more. I don't know what specific thing I should have done. I don't know why I really feel this way. I can see why people make resolutions though. I think I should, but I know they would be meaningless words. I will feel better tomorrow and forget all the resolutions until next New Year. To anyone who happens to read this... Happy NEW YEAR Skip at 5:07 AM Christmas is over. New Year is on the way. It was a good time this year with all the family able to be together. It can be a stressful time but not this year. We left on Tuesday and came back yesterday. The trip was easy this year. The brand new car was a real treat. Not much traffic and clear roads while we were traveling. On Christmas Day, a huge snowstorm turned everything white. Thank goodness we traveled on Tuesday. I felt sorry for all the people who had to work Christmas Day plowing the snow. I hope they got some time with their family and lots of overtime pay! Skip at 5:46 AM Just a wish for a Merry Christmas to all. If all goes well, I will not be posting again until next Monday. Until then, enjoy the holidays. Join me in a wish of Peace on Earth and Goodwill to all People. Skip at 4:59 AM I'm sure this is no interest to anyone, but we picked up the new car last night. It has the brand new car smell and is so much quieter then the 10 year old we traded in. But, what a performance at the dealership. For my wife and I, a car is a device to get us from point A to point B. I never dreamed of cars when I was a boy. I never wanted to get my hands dirty playing with engines. I want a reliable vehicle. That's all I require. The people who sold us the car kept us waiting over half and hour from the appointed time. To distract us from the long delay, in completing the deal, the salesman kept trying to small talk us. Since we have nothing in common it got to be quite annoying. Then they kept asking us how excited we were. Come-on. It's a new car but so what. I want the point A to point B car. It's not our first new car. I'm not planning to use a sexy new car to pull in the babes (as my wife would kill me if I tried). Just let us sign the papers, hand over the check, and let us go in peace. Finally, we complete the deal. We go to the car and look it over and immediately spot a chip on the trunk lid! They apologize, grab some paint and touch it up. Hopefully that all that is wrong but it certainly doesn't start a good customer relationship.
Skip at 5:17 AM Only 6 more days till Christmas. The times, as always, seem to fly by. Today I will pick up our new car. It's a 2002 Saturn, replacing the 1992 Saturn I am driving now. I guess you can assume I was happy with the Saturn. The dealer gave us a good price on the 2002, and a good trade in on the 1992. Since the new Saturn ION's are out there are deals on the 2002's. They tried to up-sell us to the 2003 but I can't see why I would want to pay more for a car that is in it's first model year. Hopefully, this car will last 10 years too. If it does the fact that it is a 2002 instead of a 2003 will not mean much. Skip at 5:11 AM Anyone who gets Lockergnome saw this yesterday but it is so neat that I had to record it here too. For anyone who makes CD's or has some CD's with broken cases, there is a site called papeCDcase.com. You have to check out. It has a templete for creating a CD case from a standard sheet of paper. You can enter text, graphics, or anything else you want and it will create a PDF file. You can downlaod the file, or print it directly. The form has all the markings needed to fold it into a CD case, including a nice liitle pocket for the CD. The first one takes a little time to undersand the folds. There is a great help panel on the site for instructions. Once you have tried it, you will see how easy it really is. This site is going into my bookmarks! Skip at 5:28 AM Friday was busy, missed posting anything. Hectic weekend, by my standards. Lots of things to do. Saturday morning I was involved in a test of the new DB/2 system. We tried to put it into production last Monday and failed badly when the response times turned out to be 4 minutes instead of sub-second. On Saturday everything went fine and, so far today it looks good. Maybe we have our first DB/2 system in PRODUCTION !!!! Skip at 7:08 AM What delicious irony. The campaign set up by Slashdot.org has caused one of the world's worst spammers to be inundated with junk snail mail. There is a Detroit Free Press article about it. The poor man is so upset he has hired lawyers to sue! I don't think I would ever retaliate like the Slashdot people have but I applaud their efforts on my (and your) behalf. Skip at 5:33 AM Last night was the Xmas party at the condo. Today it is lunch with my group at work. Life is so tough! I really don't enjoy these things. I'm not a grinch, it's just that I dislike group social arenas. I'm absolutely dismal at small talk. At least in the condo we can talk about things happening in the building for a little while, at todays lunch we can talk work. After that I run out of things to say. Why can't everyone be interested in geek things? THen there would be lots to talk about! Skip at 7:22 AM It's a late posting day. It's very busy at work and I've been worried about a DB/2 implementation going in. Between this, meetings, and the start of the holiday festivities (lunches, etc.) it is difficult to do any more. Skip at 9:46 AM If you want to try something a little different, why not set up a home page in England? If you log on to Beeb.net (the BBC in England) they are offering ISP services. One of the levels is pay-as-you-go, which in England means you have to pay by the minute to phone anyone. Once you reach Beeb.net the rest is free. So if you already have internet access you can get the pay-as-you-go services for no extra charge. They offer 30 meg of disk space. One free web-based email id and five child email ids. Each child id can have separate passwords. I've tried the web-based email for a few weeks. I uploaded a few files (via FTP) to the site and brought up my homepage (//floydc.members.beeb.net/index.html). It looks very good so far. If you want an alternative to GeoCities, with FTP, and no file manager, try out the Beeb! Skip at 6:35 AM Anyone who is interested in Science Fiction should check out Baen Free Library. Baen Books is making available (for free) a number of its titles in electronic format. There are no conditions and no strings attached. Most are available in several download formats. HTML, MS Reader, Palm, and Rich Text format. Baen authors, who agree, have one or more of their titles made available. Baen is hoping that it will spur more sales when people reading these free books are enticed to buy additional titles by the authors. I think this is a great way to get people involved and I hope it works to increase sales. Skip at 10:06 AM Anyone who is interested in Science Fiction should check out Baen Free Library. Baen Books is making available (for free) a number of its titles in electronic format. There is no conditions and no Skip at 9:59 AM It seems to have worked. This is a great tool. Go to w_bloggar.com to download a copy. I checked through what's new but I couldn't see anything that directly related to my problem of the last few days. However as soon as I installed version 3, everything seems fine. I can't believe that I now have a spellcheck built right in! This is great. I just noticed that in playing with the new version I deleted the original post from yesterday and replaced it with a test post. It isn't worth trying to fix. If you didn't read it yesterday, you can't read it today! Skip at 5:36 AM I just downloaded version 3 of w.bloggar. Skip at 5:40 AM It's cold in Toronto today. Last night the city called the first cold alert. That's when they go out and try to get the street people to come into shelters for the night. We have a large number of people who live outside. It seems to me that you have to reserved your corner if you want to pan-handle. Most of the prime corners have permanent residents asking passerby's for money. I don't think we are worse then any other big city in North America. I think that most of the people could get help if they wanted it. Maybe I'm wrong, maybe I should be more charitable, especially this time of year. Skip at 6:15 AM It was a trip to the dentist today. Thanks goodness for company dental plans. I know for a fact that my dentist gives me very good rates. It still adds up though. Now all I have to do is fight with the plan administrator. I've worked here for a long time, but several times I have had my claims rejected, saying that I am not covered. I requires intervention for personnel each time. Let's see how this one goes.
