Looks like there are changes to Blogger already. Cnet reports that targeted ads are to be inserted on blogs. Google can analyze the content of the blog on the fly and deposit an 'appropriate' ad. Even with RSS the ad can be inserted instream, so there could be a big market for Google. I hope Google well, but I will also move or just stop blogging if it gets too anoying. Meanwhile I'm going to just go and enjoy the coming weekend. Skip at 5:15 AM I downloaded and installed the new Ad-Aware version 6 last night. It has a nice looking interface and seems very easy to use. I like the new integrated reference file update. You no longer have to run a separate program to get the latest file. The scan seems faster and the results screen easy to use. You can find all the bad ad-ware, spy-ware, even cookies that are data collectors. You can easily get rid of any or all of the items Ad-Aware finds. This program is FREE for personal use and you can't get better then that. Skip at 5:39 AM Skip at 4:50 AM Just finished reading Lockergnome newsletter today and noted a program to catalog your removeable media called InsideCAT. Looks interesting, as there is a limited function freeware version. A professional version is 19.95 Euros. I have been using and can recommend 1disk from 1vision. I have used it for quite a while and it will catalogue my ZIP disks and CD's. I can look at the file list and search on file names without needing to mount the media. When I want to find something I have backed up it is invaluable. At the price of $29.95, 1disk is worth every penny. I'll check out InsideCAT but I can't see me changing over from 1disk. Skip at 6:25 AM Another weekend of winter. Just like everyone else, I want it to be over. We were not too bad in Toronto but there was still rain on Saturday, turning to ice, and then snow. Overnight, more snow, so Sunday morning was white and messy. At least the sun came out Sunday afternoon to make things seem better. Now we have a few days of cold predicted. I've never been a winter person and I'm not going to change now! I will just daydream about hot summer days for a while. Skip at 5:10 AM Spam has just been so bad this last week. It seems that a couple of the new id's I started using have been picked up already by the spammers. There seems to be no end to it. Even changing email id's is limited relief. I have been looking into Mailshell. They seem to have a good idea where you can use disposable id's to go surfing and/or signing up for newsletters, contests, etc.. It seems like a good idea, I'm just not sure the price is right. I have been trying to record where I used my various email id's to see if I could spot a trend as to who, among the many places I visit, is selling the data. I haven't been able get a handle on it so I'm not so sure that mailshell will give me the peace of mind I'm looking for. I'm thinking that the money might be better spent on a good filter. Skip at 5:05 AM For anyone interested in UNIX, check out SDF, a public access unix system. For a fee of $1.00 you can validate your account and get access to the system for trying out unix. You can get 15 meg of space, email access (telnet, web, or pop3) and lots of other things. Browse over to the site to read the full details. You can join immediately, without any money, but you have to validate your account before you can use some of the facilities. You can use email right away but if you don't validate within 40 days the account will be deactivated. Skip at 10:56 AM I don't know how long this link will live for but while it is active I recommend you click it to listen to "Clocks" by Coldplay. This is just a great group and the entire album "A Rush OF Blood To The Head" from which this cut, at MP3.com, comes from is worth the price. Coldplay Clocks Skip at 8:09 AM This blog is now part of Google. It's on the front page at Blogger.com and there is and article at News.com. Google has bought the company that owns and runs blogger.com. Right now it is reassuing us that nothing will change. I wonder if my insignificant little section of blogger.com will ever be Googled? Skip at 5:05 AM I subscribe to TechTV and Lockergnome newsletters. Both give you some interesting tips and ideas and are well worth opening your mailbox to. A mention, in either one, will get your web site thousands of hits. All too often, when I find something interesting, I go to the web site and find it has exceeded its bandwidth quota. I then try to remember to go back later but find I get sidetracked or just forget completely. I need to find a free little program that will take notes and pop them back to me. Probably will see one tomorrow in Lockergnome, too bad it will be a personal site at Lycos and the bandwidth will have been exceeded. Skip at 5:02 AM Another Friday. But this one is different. I want to wish a: to my special wife. Skip at 5:46 AM It's time now to fill out my benefits sheet at work. A few years ago, the company went from defined benefits to giving everyone a pot of money. They swear it was better for the employees! Of course. I love these things that start "Due to popular demand", and "To better serve you we are no longer...". That is what happended here. The company saves money and the employee is stuck. This year, just like last year, the premiums have increased but the pot of money hasn't. I wonder how I am better off on this plan? Skip at 5:15 AM OK. Complaints over. It looks like blogger is back. Now I will have to think of something to post!!!! Skip at 5:04 AM Blogger has been very good to me. I don't want to complain about a service that is free. Until the problem they have is fixed and these posts make it to my blog, I will just try a little note like this each day. Skip at 4:54 AM My first blog in days, yesterday, and it couldn't get posted. For some reasonBlogger was giving error messages about not being able to load the template. I'm giving it another try today. lets see what happens. Skip at 6:17 AM Well, I'm finally back to the blog. It was an interesting course last week. The days were spent learning how Linux on the Z-OS mainframe can work and what advantages can be gleaned from it. It does look very interesting and hopefully we will be pursuing this in the near future. I'm just amazed at how much IBM was pushing freeware! I know they like to make money selling big hardware but I suspect that they see a market for supporting all this "freeware". After customers have mission critical apps they may be willing to pay for some software support and hand-holding from IBM. Regardless of the motive IBM seems committed to pushing Linux. Skip at 5:14 AM Just back from England last night. My wife and I had a great trip, visiting my mother-in-law. Everything went well and the time away from computers and work was worth it. We were in the South and while it got cold later in the week we started off with some great weather. Nice sun and warm air. Where we were there were a few flurries on Thursday but no snow that stuck. It was a lot nicer then Toronto. Just astonished at the price of everything in the UK. Our poor Canadian Dollar is just too low to make anything affordable. Now, I am off for a 4 day course at IBM on LINUX. I will be away tomorrow up to and including Friday. Guess it will be next Monday before another post is made. Skip at 5:17 AM |
