I'm back. Just spent a very nice week in the Dominican Republic at the Riu Bambu. This is in Punta Cana, on the east coast, and is a beautiful part of the world. It was hot, of course, and we spent most of our time under some plam tress relaxing. Just what I needed. The food was great, the people friendly, the beach was miles and miles of golden sand. What more can anyone ask for? I can really recommend this one, without reservations. Now back to the everyday!

It's time to take a break. I'll not be near a computer for the next week so no entries will be made. I need some sun and I am looking forward to not being near the TV to hear the constant war coverage. I know I won't escape it entirely but as least it won't be in my face. I think I will just sit on the beach and read. See you next on March 31st or maybe April 1st.

Another day just watching the news reports and wondering what the world is coming to. Once again I just want to hope for the best for all involved.
Due to an error on my part this post didn't make yesterday. I'm just re-posting it, one day later.

A long time ago I mentioned that I listened to some computer shows on the internet. Just to recap for anyone who might be interested, the two I enjoy the most are Geeks on the Radio and Geek Radio. While the names are very similar the shows are very different. Geek Radio is set up as a call in help show. They do some news and general chat but the main part is the call in help. Geeks on the Radio has a guest format. They usually have one guest, such as a softeware developer, who will discuss their programs abilities and uses. Both shows are usually interesting and worth checking out.

With the events of the last few days, I don't feel much like updating today. Fingers crossed that everything will turn out for the best.

I don't know what Blogger will think of this, since they give a very good free service to anyone wanting a weblog. Just wanted people to know that there are competitors. One I have checked out is Blog City. The system there seems very good. There are free (check out My first page), and low cost blogs available. the system seems very stable and for the last few weeks that I have been checking, always up.
I have been using Blogger for a long time now and probably will continue but its nice to know that there are options.

We have been promised that it will be warming up this weekend. I'm looking forward to +7 tomorrow and +10 on Sunday. It should be a good few days in Toronto. Just when we are planning to fly south next weekend the warm weather is arriving in Canada.

I'm not very artistic but for a long time I wanted to update the GIF's at CactusGuy and CactusGal. I finally got around to trying it by updating CactusGal with an Easter bonnet.

The New York Times (I won't bother to link because you need to subscribe to see online) has an item about some data from space probes that has been interpreted to mean that "the Universe is shaped like a doughnut". I just wonder if that has anything to do with Canadian love of Tim Hortons? It certainly has universal appeal here, just go by any store and look at the lines! Both inside and at the drive-thru. It must be the cosmic force!

I just renewed my car license. Here in Ontario we have kiosks where you can do self-service. There is an extra charge of $1.00 per transaction for the privilege of doing it yourself. I guess the dollar is worth not having to wait in lines at the license offices. And I guess that the dollar is worth missing the unfriendly faces that work at these offices. Hmmm, after thinking about it I'm glad I spent that extra dollar.

Isn't it great to have the internet available. My wife was told about a Dr. Scholl product that interested her. We went to a couple of stores and couldn't find it, even after asking the staff. Since we didn't know quite what we were looking for I went on the internet and did some searches. I found a photo of the package, so at least we know the size, shape and wording on the package. Then a little later I found this www.coupons.com link. I checked it out and found a $2.00 coupon, good any any Dr. Scholl's product.
Stopped by the store this morning, found what we wanted and saved $2.00.

Busy day at work. Ran across a good looking site that keeps track of USENET resources. Take a look at newzbot.com. If you are looking for a particular newsgroup you can search the database there to find providers that carry it. You can also get lists of free usenet providers and ratings on some of the services.

Not much today. I noted that AOL announced today that its spam filters hit the 1 billion reject mark for a 24 hour period. They said that averaged about 28 rejects per member. I wonder how many of the 28 were from Time-Warner affiliates?

Two stories, today, that have my attention. The first is the operation by a doctor in Hamilton, Ont. on a patient in North Bay, Ont. The doctor tele-operatred over telephone lines. If this takes off I will have to get a high-speed connection at home. I don't want the doctor using my old 56k modem when I need surgery at home!
The other is Dr. Pepper's attempt to get bloggers to push their new Raging Cow product. They are offering T-shirts, products, and trips to bloggers that get high number of hits and advertise the product. I guess with the one or two hits a week that this blog gets there won't be any payola. I don't think I'll bother to follow up.
I won't post individual links but if anyone is interested in the details they can go over to Slashdot.org where there are details on both.

I just downloaded TeraTerm to use with SDF. I had been playing with PuTTY and found it to be very easy to use. However, I wanted an easy way to upload some files to SDF and was told that Teraterm would do that. After a short day I must say that it is very easy and friendly. All the telnet capabilities of PuTTY and more. The Zmodom built in works with SDF like a charm. A couple of clicks and files flow easily in either direction.

Just two weeks ago I took a couse at IBM on Linux and Sendmail was part of it. Today the headlines at C|net News (and even my local paper) were shouting vulnerability in Sendmail.

Today broke the record! Here in Toronto it was the coldest day every recorded. A blast of arctic air swept in last night and our nearly balmy weekend ended with a major freeze. It's off to work and I will try not to get my tongue too near any metal poles on the way.
