Happy Halloween

I missed posting anything so far this week. Work has been just too hectic to allow any time. I am now taking a break anyway just to get some composure. Maybe I can be back to normal by Friday. If not see you Monday!

An interesting item in this mornings paper:

One of the biggest sunspots in a decade has ejected a massive cloud of charged gas that could disrupt electrical power grids and satellite communications when it reaches Earth today, reports the Rocky Mountain News.

A sunspot cluster 10 times larger than Earth released a chunk of the sun’s outer atmosphere early Wednesday, said Larry Combs, a forecaster at the U.S. Space Environment Center in Boulder. The so called “coronal mass ejection” contains more than “a billion tons of matter and is streaking toward Earth at nearly 1 million m/ph.”

Wow!!! I'm all excited. I used to use Netpal from Kaburra when I was on Windows 95. It never worked on W2K. I was too lazy to move so I started to use Windows rasphone. I really missed the nice extras of Netpal though. Netpal keeps a log of when you connect and how long. It also has built in ping to keep connections alive. I know most people don't care anymore. Everyone except me has moved off of dial up unto DSL or Cable. Me, I just never found the need to spend more money so I kept my old modem.

Now Netpal returns! They have a new beta version 1.5 that works on W2K and XP. I downloaded it and my old user/password was accepted and now I finally have a feeling my money was not spent in vain. If you are still in the dark ages of dial up connections try Netpal. I haven't had any problems with the beta yet. Looks like I will keep this one around for a long while.

Just a small note on NPRs list of the top 300 songs voted on by NPR news staff and a few critics. It is quite a list including symphonies, Rap songs, and everything in between. I find it a very interesting read.

I occasionally go to Weblogs and browse though a few of the recently updated blogs. It used to be an exciting thing to do as I learned a few things and found the occasional new blog that was INTERESTING. Now, the blogs I find are not very interesting. The last few times I did this, I found a lot of blogs being updated by a disenchanted blogger, with nothing much to say.
I know the feeling well as I have lost the fervour of blogging. I was never really a writer and the bloom of updating mundane day to day things soon seems like a chore. Now that a lot of people, especially those on Movable Type platforms, are being spammed, they are getting turned off quickly. I wonder when the blogging bubble will burst. How many will be left?

Canada's new music service called Puretracks opened for business yesterday, but by mid-afternoon it had been swamped and told visitors to come back later. It is selling tunes for 99 cents (+ tax) and up. I don't know how many sales were made as opposed to just visitors yesterday. I also don't know if it is worth all the hype. You have to use Microsoft's Media player and it seems you can only burn it three times on a CD. I think I will wait and see.

The Javalobby has announced a new blogging site available for setting up your own blog free. JRoller is available and while I know they would like to have lots of Java users/fans blog there it is open to anyone. It is customizable and from the few blogs I have visited using JRoller it looks like a nice place to have your blog. Theer is lots of non-java blogging going on there and response looks great.
If you like Java and your not a memeber (for free) of the Javalobby, why not!

Well, I'm back. It always amazes me how much I miss the daily interaction with my computer. 10 days is a long time for an addict. I now have a lot of email to catch up on. Thanks goodness for the spam filters in POPFILE and Eudora. Working together the thousands of messages have been whittled down to less then 100. For the moment I will be recovering from my trip and the jet lag. Maybe tomorrow I will feel more like a human.

I know there has been a real lack of posting over the last few weeks. Now there will be even fewer until October 14th. I will be gone and not near a computer for the next 12 days. No possibility of posting and no way to keep in touch. So until later this month enjoy, and for Canadians Happy Thanksgiving!
