The US Seante has approved the CAN-SPAM bill. AT&T has received a patent on an Anti-Spam filter. Slowly, lots of things are being done to combat SPAM. I just don't think much of it will work. Hopefully, the biggest and most active spammers will be caught in some of the traps being sent, but I'm sure there is no way to kill the ones that will move offshore. I get hundreds of pieces of junk everyday. I'm not going to be impressed if the total goes down by ten percent. I'd need to see at least 80-90%.

I still use, and think it one of the best, Popfile. Now, with the filtering it provides, I never look at the hundreds of pieces of junk that arrive constantly. The filters have been trained to such a degree that I have a very high level of trust. I believe all the things beng done to stop spam will not eliminate my need for this great piece of software

I was browsing through C/Net News and saw that The Norwegian programmer who distributed the first tool for cracking the copy protection on DVDs has turned his attention to Apple Computer's iTunes. Jon Johansen posted a program to his web site that showed the way that copy protection could be bypassed. Is there a way that music or video can really be distributed on the net? Every time someone tries the attempt is foiled. It seems the the distributors can stay a half step ahead for just a few days.

I missed yesterday and haven't done much today. If I keep this up the year will have ended and I won't even notice.
Just thought I'd document this, but I'm not sure there is anyone online who hasn't run across the Church Sign Generator. The signs are popping up all over the web, with some very good, and very funny messages. Thanks to Aboyandhiscomputer for this great diversion.

Just a quick note today about a site listing FREEWARE (My favorite word again!!!!). At Flatrabbit there is a list of freeware, being updated weekly with new entries. A log of all entries is being kept in sub-directories divided into categories like Graphics, Security, Utilities, and Deskmods, among others. One that I found in deskmods is a tweak for W2K to give the taskbars icons 256 Colours rather then the old dull 16.

I've been using a USB Pen drive for the last few weeks. I don't know how I lived without it now! I picked up a no-name 128MB for $49.95 CDN (that's about $28.50 US) at a discount computer store. I use W2K at work and home so it is just a matter of popping the pen into the USB port. It really is nice. As the prices are doing nothing but dropping, it looks like this should be a very popular device.

Merry Christmas

It official.  With the staging of the 99th annual Santa Claus parade in Toronto yesterday, Christmas season has arrived in Canada. The weather was much better this year.  Overcast but no rain (or snow, like last year).  The parade goes by  my home less then one block south.  It makes the neighborhood busy.  I prefer to wait until Global broadcasts the highlights at 4PM.  If anyone is interested the highlights are available on line somewhere at Canada.com.

Just a quick note today of a site I have found to be very valuable. Howstuffworks has been around on the web for a long time now. They have built up a large array of just about how everything works. You can get info on computers or just everyday things, like toasters and toilets. When I want a quick overview of something it is the first place I check.

I signed up for Mailblocks when they offered 2 free years extra. It seemed like a good idea to try out the "Challenge System" to weed out spam. I added two of my accounts to Mailblocks and then waited to see what would happen. As of today I'm not very impressed. For every message that arrives a message is sent back and the sender asked to go to a web page and enter a few letters/numbers. If they do that, their mail is immediately delivered to my in box and all is well. They never have to do it again as their address is marked as a good one and future mail is passed right through. The few contacts I have that have used the system had no problem.
But it hasn't cut down on any spam. It doesn't reach my in-box but it still accumulates in the the holding folder. The main problem I have is that the challenge is sent out with a reply address of me@mailblocks.com not me@the_real_address.com. This means that honest spammers keep sending me messages that my name has/will be removed using the me@mailblocks.com. That is not the address I want removed. Bad spammers don't even get the challenge as the address has been spoofed anyway.

Search company Google is testing software that lets people navigate the Web without opening up an Internet browser. You can get it at Google Labs. The Deskbar cuts out the browser for search tasks. Instead of launching a browser, the Deskbar will display results in a small window in the lower right of the screen. Features such as a global command key ("control, alt, G,") that lets people search a term they have highlighted in a Word document, e-mail or within a browser page and searches to Google News by using the command "control, N."
I've just installed it and already it looks like Google has gotten another toehold in my life!

This news is EVERYWHERE. I know it's probably being commented on by everyone too. But, Microsoft it seems is set to put it's money where it's mouth is and offer a $250,000 reward leading to the arrest of whoever was responsible for 2 recent viruses.
Five million in all is available to be used to pay for arrest and convictions of virus makers. A very good gesture and one that I hope does at least impair the exploits of some. It is suggested that this will break up to networking between hackers and virus makers. I'm glad that Microsoft is doing something, I just wish that they would also pay people who find the bugs in their existing software.

I, mainly, use two anti-virus engines. I pay for eTrust from Computer Associates and I also have AVG Anti-virus which is free for home use. Both seem to live together in harmony.

I get, almost, daily updates for eTrust. AVG seems for the most part to update weekly, but sometimes, like this week I have received three. I presume that it has something to do with the newly rampant email virus reported in todays paper.

Of the two AVG, usually, seems to be the first to find problem files/data. Both have reported problems that the other didn't recognize, but did on subsequent updates. It just makes me glad that I do have both. 99% of the time the problem is attached to some spam and I would never have opened anyway. But, that 1%, is enough to warrant running both.
