Just got a new PC at work. An HP Compaq, running XP and a Viewsonic 17in flat panel display. What a difference that makes. I suddenly have more desk space than I've seen in years. Room for more clutter! I saw a notice in the free Toronto paper about the US Computer Emergency Readiness Team. If you go there, you can sign up for newsletters on Technical Cyber Security Alerts, Cyber Security Alerts, and Cyber Security Tips. They have two flavours, one for techies and one for the general public. It may be worth checking out. Skip at 5:48 AM What a day it was, a two hour power failure in the office disrupted almost everything. Here in Toronto a lot of the downtown core was powerless from 10:30 to 12:30 yesterday. Various reasons have been put forth but the only thing that matters was that there was NO POWER! Fortunately with UPS, the servers were brought down gently and everything went, almost, as planned in such an emergency. Once that was over the MyDoom virus decided to flood the gates with huge volumes of harmful junk. It seems to have subsided today and with luck nothing serious will have happened. Wonder what today will bring? Skip at 5:25 AM I've been doing a bit of online shopping recently and have had a bit of a mixed experience. Several have been good but others have left a lot to be desired. When problems crop up, I wonder why I do this. I live in the big city and almost everything I want is available, as long as I am willing to go to the right stores. Most of the time I can resist, since the shipping charges more then eat up the savings I can find. Sometimes a really good sale, or some unique new product temps me. The latest shopping though was to get a gift for someone in the US. I found a BUY-IT-NOW deal on Ebay and attempted to order. However the seller only accepted PAYPAL. I have a verified Canadian account but the seller would not accept international accounts. Several emails to the seller, explaining that I am in Canada but the shipment was to the US did nothing. Also I found that PAYPAL will not allow me to enter a non-Canadian address as a shipping site. Several emails to them have produced nothing but anger as they seem to refuse to budge. I could understand them not letting a verified account enter Brazil, or Russia, or some other place but the US!! After a long and mostly happy relationship to PAYPAL, I am going to reconsider my use. Skip at 7:16 AM There is another big storm blowing in today. Here it is not going to be as bad as the middle Atlantic states. Some small consolation I guess. It really seems like this is going to be a long, cold winter. I suppose the cold I suffered from last week has made me tired and a bit depressed. Maybe it won't be as bad as I keep thinking. Meanwhile I will just be curling up and taking it easy when I'm not at work. I need to figure out how I can curl up and take it easy there too! Skip at 7:02 AM I have been out of action for the last two days with a cold that left me tired and unwilling to do much, except rest. Hopefully the weekend will restore my health to the point I will be my old self by Monday. Skip at 6:14 AM An interesting site, is this one, listing programs, mostly free, that are very small but useful. Check out some of the offerings at.....
Skip at 7:31 AM For a Friday funny, take a look at the first iteration of Microsoft Windows at Digibarn, a site dedicated to computer history. There are pictures, courtesy of the University of New Mexico, of the disks, equipment, and procedures involved to get version 1.0 up and running. Remember it was only 1985! Skip at 5:18 AM Another day with little of interest to post. I don't know how much longer I will be using Journalspace. I keep getting notices that my premium status is expiring today. That means I won't be able to post with w.bloggar. If I can't use w.bloggar then I will just go back to posting Blogger only. If anyone is interested and you don't see anything new at Journalspace, then click on this: Weblog at Schrysler.com Skip at 7:25 AM Google has added more search by number features: Area Codes, e.g. 426, bring up maps. UPC codes, e.g. 073333531084, bring up some information about the product. Flight numbers, e.g. usair 50, provide links to flight tracking Vehicle ID (VIN) numbers link to a CARFAX report on what kind of car and its status. Patent numbers, e.g. patent 5123123, links to patent numbers. U.S. Postal Service tracking numbers link to package status. And there is more! It is just unbelievable how useful Google has become to so many. Skip at 5:08 AM I don't know why, but I just enjoy Homestarrunner's Storngbad Emails a lot. There is a new one almost every Monday. Skip at 11:50 AM I tried this one before and thought I'd see if anything would change. Guess not.... ![]() Which OS are You? Skip at 5:42 AM While visiting Chris Pirillo, I read his entry about fontifier and the offer there to create your own font from your own handwriting. It sounded like fun so I printed off the template, wrote my letters with a black felt tip, and scanned it in as a GIF. There I had a few problems until I read the instructions and set the DPI to 100 and kept the GIF to within 960 by 1200. Once I did that in less then a minute from uploading, I had my very own truetype font. Skip at 5:04 AM There has been very little interesting news (for me at least) in the last few weeks. Like many geeks I frequent Slashdot and News.com to see what is up. There are a lot of geeky blogs out there and I visit some on an infrequent basis. Other then the Google IPO, I can't get too excited about anything I've read. The leak in the International Space station is exciting (and scary) for the poor astronauts, but not much more than an eyebrow raiser in my life. I suppose it is the time of year. I always get reflective, and then bored with my life at this time of year. Skip at 6:14 AM It's 2004, time for reflection on the year past, and planing for the year ahead. I never have been caught up in the resolution making tide. I know that most life changing events take place without my consent, so why should I try to tempt fate. I know any resolution, I make, will fail in less time then it takes to make. So it's back to work now. A new calendar on the wall, and a cup of coffee to get me going. Hope your New Year will be all you want it to be. Skip at 5:19 AM |
