Internet Time is a not so "new" way to tell time, invented and marketed by the Swiss watch company Swatch. The current Internet Time is the same all over the World (no time zones or daylight saving time adjustments).
I've always like the concept, even if it probably was just a marketing ploy when it first came out. I don't understand why more people haven't taken to it. With the internet the world has shrunk and "Internet Time" seems like a great way to make it easier link up by eliminating some time differences. Downloads of the code are still free at Swatch.com just check out the site map and go to "Internet Time".

I just love this. It's a bit expensive for me. I don't see why it should cost so much but I do love it.

Some people seem to be upset about Blogger's support of ATOM and lack of RSS options. Into the breech comes a neat service from Feedburner. It is labeled pre-release Alpha but it looks pretty good already. Smartfeed as described on the site:

SmartFeed is an intelligent, subscriber-aware feed service that enables you to reach the widest possible audience while publishing a single feed on your blog or site. Today, SmartFeed converts Atom feeds to RSS on-the-fly for readers that do not support Atom. In the coming weeks, SmartFeed will be getting even smarter!

I have signed up and now have:

My removal of the Microsoft's patch for Sasser went well last night. So far it seems to have solved the problem. Fingers are still crossed but I am hopeful that all is fixed.

A week ago I tried booting my computer and it took f-o-r-e-v-e-r. About 30 minutes. I was confused and worried but I had some things I needed to do so I quickly did them, shut down, and vowed to look into it the next day. Next day everything was just fine. Scratch head and wonder! Then last night the same thing. I tried booting and it took 1 hour. I did a shut down and tried again and another hour! Today I did some checking and found that many people running W2K are having the same problems. Seems that Microsoft's fix for Sasser worm KB835732 is causing some W2K machines to act crazy and take for 30-90 minutes to boot. I'm going to remove this tonight and hopefully have an operating machine again. Tek-Tip Forum has some tips on removal I hope will help:

After installing Security fix KB835732, the SYSTEM.exe
procress uses up 99% of CPU time, and make the system non-
responsive.

To unistall it, I did the following
(1) Boot into Safe mode.
(2) Run TaskManager - and noticed that the SYSTEM process
was using 99% of the CPU time.
(3) From TaskManager set the Priority of the EXPLORER
process to REALTIME, so that I can get to the control
panel.
(4) Run ADD/REMOVE PROGRAM from control panel.
(5) Go back to TaskManager and set the Priority of
MSHTA.exe to REALTIME, so that the ADD/REMOVE PROGRAM can
get some CPU time.
(6) Select and Remove "Windows 2000 Hotfix - KB835732".
(7) Go back to TaskManager and set the Priority
of "SPUNIST.exe" to REALTIME, for the uninstall program to
run.
(8) Wait a few minutes, and the uninstall program will
eventually ask you to click FINISH to reboot the machine.
It took a long time for the system to shutdown and I just
unplugged the power.
(9) The machine should become normal after reboot.

The first long weekend of the year, in Canada, is now over. I'm glad I have this forum to release my annoyance of how terrible the weather was. Let the record show that this must have been one of the worst Victoria Day weekends ever, with rain from beginning to end. It wan't exactly cold but with the wind it came close. It didn't entirely ruin the pleasure of having an extra day off but it did put a dent in it. Now that this will go down in the historical record, I can go back to work. Maybe that rainy day off wasn't so bad!

Tomorrow starts the the May 24th long weekend in Canada (also known as the Victoria Day Long Weekend - for Queen Victoria's birthday). Today starts the preparation for Victoria Day.
I.E. Lazy IdlnessTraining.
Nothing much happening and trying to do nothing much until next Tuesday. According to the weatherman it will be raining for the next three days so it will probably be easy to do.

For anyone who hasn't had much exposure to CSS there is a great CSS Tutorial for beginners. Now there's really no excuse for not being a CSS devotee, since most all browsers support CSS standards. CSS is apt for even lightweight sites. The tutorial is at this site. They have 5 main tutorials which go through many different steps and impart a lot of knowledge. Try it out and see what you can learn!

It seems to me that blogging turns out to be a passing fancy to lots of people. I have run across interesting sites and I bookmark them or blogroll them and start visiting. Almost every one that I do, after a few months, either stops posting or maybe posts once in a great while (usually just to say they are remiss in blogging). I know from WebLogs.com that hundreds of blogs are being updated every hour. There is great interest but there are very few interesting long term sites. The political sites and pundits seem to last. Maybe I should try commenting on politics here, but it is not a topic I find interesting. There are some very personal sites out on the web. Again this is not something I am interested in. I really don't want to know how someones date went, or how someone longs for the sexy person they see and can't get up the nerve to tell.
Guess I just keep on doing what I've been doing and troll the internet looking for a good computer related site to bookmark.

Yesterday was just too hectic. I won't go into details but I am glad that it doesn't happen too often.
Now that things have calmed down I was relaxing and ran across NotePad2 in Lockergnome's Windows Fanatics newsletter. This freeware program keeps all the simplicity of the original NotePad but in a very user friendly way adds customized features that I want from time to time. I've only used this for an hour now but I think that NotePad will be NotePad2 by default very soon!

Nothing but MT (Movable Type) talk out in the blog world today. The new licensing system obviously has many, many people upset. I have never used MT. Everyone who did seemed to be very pleased. I will be interested in seeing if all this uproar changes MT's plans.

Yahoo has responded to Google by increasing the amount of storage offered on their email system to 100 meg. Competition is always good for the consumer.

It's Friday and in the great blogging tradition it is time for some fun! NameStatistics is a great place to check out. Have you ever wondered how your name stacks up against others. You can enter your first name, last name, nick name, etc. and see how popular or unique the name is. The site uses census data and has thousands of male, female, and family names. My name is of course VERY UNIQUE!

Everyone occasionally wonders how much time they have left. At Northwest Mutual there is the longevity game. Answer a few questions and see how long you have. If you don't like the answer you can go to MSN and try the Life Expectancy Calculator .
Don't get too depressed. Keep in mind that the results are the average life expectancy of people in the given circumstances. In other words, about half of the people in those circumstances lived longer than what the "age tabulator" indicates.

I ran across an interesting addition for "Phishing" patrols called SpoofStick from Corestreet.com. It is a browser extension that adds a tool bar to IE or Mozilla to show you the high level domain. It gives you a quick visual check as to just where you are.

I have been getting so many fake emails. People "Phising" for my personal info. What Is "Phishing?"

"Phishing" refers to a person or a group of cyber-criminals who create an imitation or copy of an existing legitimate Web page to trick users into providing sensitive personal information. Responding to "phishing" emails put your accounts at risk.

Everyone has to be careful. If you are not sure how to protect yourself there is a very good tutorial at Ebay. This is specific to Ebay (and Paypal), but the info will allow you to see what people are doing and what to look for no matter what other bank, credit card, or other account info these thieves are after.

Micrososft has created VB at the Movies. If you watch five and rate them you can get a FREE (my favorite word) copy of VB .NET 2003. The description at the site says:

The 101 short films provide everybody from the beginner through the advanced developer with an opportunity to ramp up their VB skills. In studio fashion, they are releasing two categories each week.
Let us know what you think! View and rate five movies, then sign up to receive your redemption code email entitling you to a complimentary Not-For-Resale copy of Visual Basic .NET 2003 Standard Edition.

Check this one out if you are interested in VB .NET!

What's with all the SPAM? The last few days have been the worst ever. Fortunately, with Popfile, I don't have to handle this mess. I just get to look at the totals, and they are growing. Very few have gotten through Popfile, and I have had to delete only two, or so per day that did. Seems the placing of random words at the bottom of SPAM has diminished. I just want to know what all those stupid lawmakers think of all the new laws and CANSPAM acts. They are obviously useless.

It was a rainy weekend in Toronto, again! A trip out to the stores on Saturday was quite an ordeal. We went to Zellers, IGA, and Loblaws and in ALL three there were problems checking out with items not ringing up as per the shelf sticker or advertising flyer. Zellers was the worst offender and those TV ads about them getting "Better and Better" were not ringing true. When confronted with the issues all prices were corrected for us but nothing was done to fix the system. The next customer in line with the same products will have the same problem. What's going on?
