Just in case anyone stops by I wanted to let them know I will be away until at least July 5th. I won't be able to jot down any notes here until then. I have high hopes that summer will be starting today and last for at least a week. The way things have been going has made me pack the umbrella though. Still, I'm looking forward to this little holiday. See you soon. Drop by after the 5th.

Gmail is already getting some notice from developers. A great new utility is G-Mailto v1.01 that automatically associates "mailto" email links on the web with GMail. So clicking a link will open up the GMail compose window instead of opening up something like Outlook Express that doesn't work with GMail (yet).
Mike is also kind enough to put other links to Gmail products like Pop Goes GMail. If you don't have Gmail then email me. I still have a few invites left. If you do check out this page!

Obviously the state of the computer industry is not as well as we would hope. Comdex has been officially cancelled this year. Last year Comdex Canada was cancelled but this announcement is a real shocker.
Supposedly it will return in 2005.

I've mentioned this before but one of the most enjoyable things I have changed on my computer is the cursor. I have been using CursorXP for a long time now. Long before it was bought out by Stardock. It is very stable. I've had it on machines running WIN95, W2K, and XP. It's easy to change cursors and there is a site called Wincustomize that has lots of user designed cursors you can download and use. I just installed 'Simplicity' and have been using the small orange cursor all morning. This is a great product. You can use it for FREE or for $10 you can upgrade to the PLUS version. Check out the site to see the extras. Give the free version a try. I'll bet you will never remove it!

There is many references on the net today about a UK firm creating stealth Wallpaper (rather than give any one person credit I just used a Google News link). This seems like a great idea. You can create a stealth home or office and keep all your data secret. I wonder if it would work in my condo? Of course I won't be able to log on to my neighbors unencripted wi-fi connection. Maybe I'll wait.

I was looking at Bloglines top links today and found the number one link was Joel On Software. Joel Spolsky has a very interesting article titled "How Microsoft Lost the API War". If you develop for Microsoft desktops or servers this is well worth reading. For the tech investor it is interesting reading since it might influence future plans to invest in Microsoft stock. For the average user it is interesting to see how the future will involve lots of money for upgrades to keep with Microsoft.

My ISP has just added SpamAssasin to vet my mail. It seems to be doing OK so far, only a couple of false hits. Hopefully adding them to the white-list will fix that. Now, I have my ISP, then Popfile, and Eudora's own junk filters so the spam has really diminished. A triple hit and still:

Yesterday I got a piece of mail in my INBOX saying that I have a piece of spyware on my system and if I just click on the link it will remove the terrible AD-Aware. Yes, they were going to for FREE remove that terrible piece of software! I just love it. If my mother was get this I'm sure she would click. Between Ad-Aware and Spybot my system has fended off a myriad of threats to my system. I guess, I can't blame these guys for trying.

Nothing much to say today. Just interested in the battle between Yahoo and Google. Now, Yahoo has matched Google in space. They also bumped up allowed attachment size to 10 MB. For $20 they will double the new size. Guess anyone who has not moved off Yahoo might reconsider staying.

If you have any friends, co-workers, relatives, etc. who continuously ask you stupid questions just because you know how to find thing on the web , send them this link!

I have been using Gmail for a while now. I set up my wife, who has taken to it very well. In fact I think she loves it! I have a couple of Gmail invites left and will share them with people who drop by my blog. Email me with a request if you are interested and I will consider polite, honest requests. Here's your chance!

For some Friday fun check out the Lego cubesolver. A great site describing how the author made a Lego robot that can solve a Rubik's Cube. There are instructions of how it was done and some video of the robot in action.

A handy place to bookmark is iTools where you can get a single page to kick off your search, word lookup, currency conversion, map lookup, etc. Rather then go to the individual sites you can use this tool to do it for you. The web search defaults to Google but you can change it to AlltheWeb, AltaVista, Ask Jeeves, and others. The research tools let you look up Encarta or Britannica, newspapers, quotations, etc. These is a lot more then I have posted here. Take a peek and I'm sure you will keep this one handy.

An addition....Sympatico.MSN had a big noon time barbeque party at Yonge and Dundas here in Toronto today. Free Hamburgers, Hotdogs, drinks, hats, and keychains.

Wow, I haven't been keeping up! Here is Canada a big change has just occurred. Sympatico our biggest ISP run by Bell Canada is now MSN! A new FAQ for users gives some of the details of the change. They are creating a joint Web portal that would combine the existing content of Bell's Sympatico.ca site and Microsoft's msn.ca site. No word on who will own what in the resulting mix.
This is a big change. I'm stunned that a move this big has escaped my attention till now. I would have thought there would have been a big outcry about Canadain culture being wiped out by Microsoft! How times have changed!

I missed an entry again, yesterday. I just don't know where the time goes. I did spend a long time at the CBC Radio Canada Haiti page. There is a very interesting series of Flash pictures to accompany the audio from the various shows they have done on the poorest country on earth. It is an eye opening and heart wrenching saga. I know it takes a long time to go through the entire presentation but it is worth it. I just get so mad at the regular media when they only report on Haiti when there is a new crisis and let it fall from everyone's mind in between.

Just a quick Friday entry. Copied fromScriptygoddess who also attributes the find to someone else is a link to

Slayeroffice: Color Palette creator.

It is a great tool to find shades from a base color. It will create 10 shades of the base color, located top-left, at varying degrees of opacity. The top row emulates opacity over a white background, the bottom over black. The opacity values are 100% opaque, 75%, 50%, 25% and 10% on the top row. The bottom row begins at 85% rather than 100% and continues on as the first.

For anyone still working with mainframes a great resource is Xephon's Mainframe Month. Xephon publishes journals on CICS, DB/2, MVS, MQ, and SNA. All are great repositories of information and tips. They have also opened their library so that any issue over 2 years old is available in HTML or PDF for FREE!. You can subscribe to a monthly email edition and get notified at the first of each month. I still use the mainframe every day and have used many of the tips found in these journals. Unfortunately the current subscription prices are a bit too high for my company to subscribe but I still find interesting and helpful items in the older issues.

I have been sent more then 20 emails with Netsky and with Beagle viruses attached. I have received more spam in the last few days then I did all last month! Fortunately, AVG and E-Trust bag all the emails attachments. POPFILE has done a fantastic job of keeping all the spam out of my face. I just like to check the totals now and then and was floored by them today. What is the average user doing? I would think that virus and spam attacks would be turning them off the internet altogether. What do these idiots sending this stuff think they are accomplishing?
