For anyone who likes to keep track of time, a nice little program from Clocklink will allow you to have this at your website, or on your desktop. You can customize the colour, time-zone, and size. Also you can have a traditional clock face or digital. Click the clock to check it out and rent a free clock. Skip at 6:05 AM For a little bit of morbid fun generate your own tombstone before you even die. After all, we prepare our wills, why not include a picture of how you want your final resting place to look. Alternately, generate tombstones for all your friends or enemies for a little bit of therapy. Skip at 6:17 AM This exclusive offer for Microsoft customers is still available. Free 12-month software subscription to CA's eTrust EZ Armor-LE Antivirus and Firewall security suite. Valid for new users only. Limit 1 per household. Customers may elect to upgrade to eTrust EZ Armor with enhanced firewall functionality. Annual subscriptions can be renewed after first year at current renewal rate. I noticed this free software offer expires 2/1/05, which has been extended from the original offer. Link to my-etrust.com. I've been using this for the last 2 months. It does the job and the price is right. If you really like ZoneAlarm, or have some other firewall installed you may not be interested. If you need a firewall and anti-virus protection then this is a good deal. Skip at 11:50 AM I see that all the buzz last week, I even noted earlier that CNN had picked up on it too, has been given 'Urban Legend' status at snopes.com. I found this whole story a bit hard to believe but it was so scary that it might have been true. Just goes to show how the new rumor mill on the internet is as powerful as the old fashioned one the Mom's in my home town had back when was a kid. Trouble is that when CNN is fooled into passing the info on, how can I know that it was just an overblown imagination? No wonder everyone feels the world is getting scarier. Skip at 6:31 AM If you have been reading any of the tech blogs I am sure you have heard about the Internet Explorer Blog: The IE Blog I'm glad they are going to be a little more open and maybe some interaction will spur improvements in IE. I am going to subscribe to it and see if there is any interesting developments, but so far Firefox has won me over. Skip at 5:35 AM Having nothing to say I guess I should jump on to the top stories from all the other bloggers. The one that strikes me as strange is that plane from Detroit to LA. I saw it on CNN as well and was as dumbfounded as everyone else that this could have happened. The other is Krispy Kreme's new doughnut flavoured drinks. I tried a sample last week and nearly had to see my doctor for some insulin. If you have shares in this company SELL NOW! Skip at 5:19 AM I've never been a big Lindows booster but I am pleased to see that Microsoft has paid them twenty million dollars to take over the Lindows name and site. This should be a real boost since the Lindows people had changed their name to Linspire anyway, and everyone one who has any interest in Linux already knew that. I've always been partial to the David and Goliath saga, and when the David wins I always cheer. I hope they use the money wisely. Skip at 6:46 AM Another item from pantsfactory is more then just humor. This treatise on how you can spell viagra on a computer screen, opens your eyes as to why spam is so easy. For a human eye most any one of the millions of combinations will do the job. For a computer to recognize it takes a lot of power. Skip at 5:31 AM I'm not sure what Google is doing. Giving away megs of storage with Gmail and buying lots of other sites. Now they turn another acquisition into a Free Product I was glad they "freed" Blogger Pro, and now just days after announcing it acquired Picasa, Google offers the software for free download Skip at 5:53 AM Just a quick note before the weekend starts. Check out Homestarrrunner's experimental film, 'They May Be Giants'! It is up to the usual high standard, with great music. I found it to be a very catchy tune. I've been a regular visitor to Strongbad's Email as he answers some of the great email questions he receives at the Homestarrunner site. Be sure to check out both. Skip at 5:37 AM There is a site up now trying to convince people why they should switch to Firefox. I have been using Mozilla 1.7 but after visiting this site I downloaded Firefox and am glad I did. I really like it so far. I just like the feel of it. It installed with no problem, copied my bookmarks, and was flying on the first click. I am very impressed with the hard work that has gone into creating a real light weight, but heavy duty browser. This is still not version 1.0 but as the site says many people believe that this version is stable. From my use I agree. I'll add my voice in urging you to try it too. Skip at 5:47 AM I needed a little laugh this morning and found it at the pantsfactory. They had an entry labeled 'Why you should never put your picture on the Internet ...and this link. I couldn't resist passing it on. Skip at 4:48 AM I got a VIVITAR 3735 digital Compact camera. It is working just fine but I am having trouble getting it to write to a compact flash card. The camera can attach to my computer directly but it eats batteries like crazy when I do that. I got a compact flash card and reader and they work fine by themselves but whenever I try to move a picture from the camera memory to the compact flash all I get is the picture number as a name and a size of ZERO. Anyone, out there, had any experience with this camera? Skip at 10:16 AM I added another button to allow people to sign up to an RSS feed from my blog via Bloglines. I've written about Bloglines before and have been using them to set up a list of some technical blogs. They have made the system very easy to use and if you haven't checked them out before take another look. There has been several new features added recently. I have grown to like this service and can recommend it. ![]() Skip at 6:14 AM Developers at the open-source Mozilla Foundation have confirmed that the latest version of their Web browsers have a security flaw that could allows attackers to run existing programs on Windows XP operating systems. If you are using Mozilla, make sure you download and install the fix. Skip at 5:14 AM I must admit I hadn't heard about Wikipedia until several other bloggers started congratulating them on reaching a milestone. Wikipedia is now bigger than fee-based Britannica. It is an open-content encyclopedia in many languages. In the English version, started in January 2001, they are now working on over 300,000 articles. Quality varies from article to article but overall looks very high. Like any other free site, they are looking for donations and volunteers. I've bookmarked this one and will visit it some more in the future. A very impressive gem that missed my radar and maybe yours. Skip at 5:37 AM Catching up on my emails I have one from Novell. Right now, courtesy of Novell, you get the following FREE: - SUSE LINUX Standard Server 8.0 (ISO Installation Images) - SUSE LINUX 9.1 Professional (Bootable Installation DVD) - Ximian Desktop 2.0 Evaluation (ISO Image) - Ximian Red Carpet 2.0.2 Evaluation (ISO Image) - Novell Linux Services 1.0 (ISO Image & NLS Companion CD) - Novell GroupWise for Linux 6.5.1 - Server, Client & Messenger - and more... I don't imagine that this will last long. I signed up and have forwarded the email to a few friends. Better check it out fast if you are interested. As a side note News.com and others all note that SPAM can be beat in 2 years if everyone works together. A three-day UN conference is trying to unite everyone in fighting this. I wish them well, but I'm keeping my popfile. Skip at 4:56 AM I was back yesterday, even though I never got a chance to post anything here. It is incredible how much backlog can accumulate in such a short time. I spent the entire day at work catching up there, and the rest of the day at home catching up. A lot of the email newsletters I get, just got filed and probably will never be read. I actually enjoyed getting away from the computer for a few days. Microsoft was kind to me while away. They delivered two packages. One was a promo copy of Visual Basic Net and the other was a book on security. I need more time in a day! Skip at 5:50 AM |
