I was wrong when I said the Hitchhikers Guide to the Universe would be replaced with episode two last Tuesday. You still have time to listen if you are quick. According to the BBC episode one will be replaced after tonights rebroadcast of Tuesdays episode two. Another reminder is to try del.icio.us if you haven't already. This "social bookmark" site has become my second home. It is so easy to save bookmarks while surfing and see what others are saving as well. Skip at 6:11 AM There is a great article available at CNET News all about RSS. It has a great tutorial on RSS. If you wanted to know why RSS is important, how it works, and even get some quick RSS links from the editor, check this out. Even if you are comfortable with RSS it is still worth seeing how you can put it into understandable terms for your less computer literate friends. Skip at 6:05 AM If you are a wannabe hacker, check out the Hacker Handle Generator. You can amuse yourself with suggested names. If this gets to be too much, try a real Zen experience by visiting this site, and contemplate your existence. Skip at 5:48 AM Not much new to say. I thought I would remind anyone interested that BBC4 has started their new series of Hitchhikers Guide to the Universe. It is on Tuesdays and Thursdays and started last week so if you missed episode one hurry and listen today. Tomorrow it will be replaced with episode two. Skip at 5:32 AM I was away yesterday, and when I returned I found out that "Google is Local" now in Canada. It is still beta as you can see from the logo.
Skip at 5:06 AM Over at geekgrrl's Anything but Ordinary there is a reference to the Blue Man's experiment on web design page resizing. The resolution experiment shows you how a page less them 800 pixels can be dynamically resized. Very nice work and worth a look. Skip at 4:49 AM Pardon my ranting, but today I just want rage against someone at Chrysler who has set up a system that only dealers can get to. Having a name that matches the car company and having a site like SChrysler.com, has left me open to being confused by the public. Some of them think I sell cars, or run a dealership. Over the last few years I have received some interesting emails because of this. Now, I am getting answers to car mechanical problems that I never asked. Someone has entered a wrong email address and all of the responses they should be getting are coming to me. I have tried to contact the company but there is no email address I can find that will accept mail. Everything get bounced saying that the address is send only and you must log on to the dealer network. Great, I'm sick of getting these emails. Someone is not getting the material they need. How is this going to get resolved? I'm ready to hack into the dealer network! Skip at 5:30 AM A my! I missed Talk Like A Pirate Day completely. Yesterday, September 19th was the official day. I don't know why the calendar makers can get their act together and put a notation on the day. If Presidents Day gets listed why not Talk Like A Pirate Day? If you missed it too and want to make up, you can play the Pirates role playing game. Shiver me Timber! Skip at 5:18 AM Since Firefox is getting a lot of blog time everywhere, under the heading of Gadgets and CoolTools is Weatherfox, "a highly customizable Firefox extension that brings weather forecasts to your browser". It looks like it might be a very useful tool and another reason to look at Firefox if you haven't already. Skip at 6:33 AM Any MAC users can log out now, for Windows users there is a good resource at Liutilities.com. the WINDOWS PROCESS LIBRARY.......... It contains information about all common Windows processes and is continuously updated with new information. You can find a subset of the most popular processes listed in WinTasks Process Library. The categories available online are: Security Risks, System Processes, and Applications. Except for an irritating pop-up window, this site is a valuable resource. Skip at 10:29 AM The excitement is building. The people at Mozilla.org certainly have done their best to make sure that the world is aware of FireFox 1.0 preview release. Bloglines has 4 of the top links about FireFox. Several of the blogs I read regularly have given FireFox space. The most talked about item is "Live Bookmarks". This seems to be exciting the masses. I haven't downloaded it yet but obviously will soon. You can to by going to the FireFox site. Skip at 6:19 AM Slashdot reviewed Yoper Linux yesterday. A good review about how easy and fast it can be installed on the desktop. Of course, being Slashdot, the site was down for a little bit when the hordes of Slashdot readers clicked on the link. They are back now and this looks like a site to bookmark. You can download the ISO and give it a try. A great little site I ran across in the newsgroups yesterday. Someone was upset by the postings of an individual and the response was to click on this link for the answer. I was just ROFL. If you need an interpretation, click on the link. Skip at 6:34 AM According to Chris Pirillo at his blog, this little item escaped his notice till now. It escaped mine too. It is Microsoft's Calculator Plus. This free (and unsupported) application includes all the mathematical functions you are used to and the addition of conversion functions. It only runs on XP systems, and if that includes you it is worth the download. Skip at 6:21 AM Nothing much new in my life. Just going to take it easy this morning. For anyone using Blogger, you probably already know but they are celebrating their 5th birthday (HAPPY BIRTHDAY BLOGGER!). As is the custom in the internet they are giving us some presents. For Blogspot users, ads have been eliminated. You can sign-up for ad-sense and make some money. There are several other but the one that interests me is add a icon to allow readers of my blog to email an entry to anyone they think might be interested. I like the idea of that. Now if only I have someone who read the blog. Someone with friends. I can only dream! Skip at 6:11 AM When I started using XP, I found the file search very slow. I found out about Agent Ransack, a free tool for finding files and information on your hard drive fast and efficiently. I've never looked back. It is everything I want and need. It really is fast and efficient. Visit the web site for all the info but I can highly recommend it. There is a pro version but unless you need to look in ZIP files I don't think you will need it. Agent Ransack is provided FREE of charge and you can register it, free of charge. Skip at 6:27 AM DomainSite.com is offering 25 free .info domains to anyone that wants one. After the 25th domain they are only $3.99 each. From what I can tell it is legit, as a few of my friends have registered some domains with them that are up and working. I'm not sure when or if the offer expires, the heading says "Limited Time". So you may want to move fast if you are interested. I have just tried registering three .INFO sites and all went well. If nothing else you can use them as secondary domains that you park on top of your existing domain. I won't have any mission-critical sites with them. You could register the domain with them then transfer it to another registrar and have the domain for 2 years for the price of one. Skip at 6:50 AM You noticed, I made an entry today. Last week I said see you Wednesday. Well I made it back and have some time so I was doing some more clean up. I couldn't resist posting the Google item. I have also just renewed my Zonkboard for another year. I don't know why, since nobody every uses it. I was wondering if I should just cancel it and forget to whole idea. But, trying to be optimistic I did the renewal. Why not leave me a note to weigh in on whether I'm crazy or not! Skip at 8:03 AM It seems the time is right for a dose of techno-paranoia. Check out what Google knows about you. This page gives you a hint of what can be done by modern technology. I knew that this is possible. I just don't think that I have anything to hide and that Google is not interested in me that much detail. For the free services I am willing to let them read my e-mail to Grandma. It might help put them to sleep! Skip at 5:08 AM I'm ready for a long weekend. Might as well start now. I don't know how the weather will be since the forecasts for Frances can't say for sure if it will go north, east, or some combo after hitting Miami. Some say Monday will be wet around here, some say it will be Wednesday. I will probably have an entry for Wednesday so I hope the rain stays away till then. No need for anyone to check back here till then too! As a filler till then check out this great: Skip at 4:58 AM A strange name but useful site is del.icio.us. I read about this in InfoWorld and checked it out yesterday. It is and easy to use BookMarklet site. You sign up and then save anything you find while surfing. It is easy to do, just save the url with one or more tags for future searching. There are add ins for IE and Mozilla so you can quickly add a link. Your list is available from any computer. You can get your bookmarks out in an RSS feed. This makes nice insurance from losing anything by being able to backup your list on your own equipment. This site says it is for "Social Bookmarks". You can easily search your own bookmarks, or search for what others are bookmarking and add interesting ones to your list. It seems very busy so the news of this has gotten out. Skip at 5:55 AM Wow! It has been over 2 years that I have been playing with this blog. I started in August of 2002 and kept all this drivel in archives. The archive list has grown on this weblog taking most of the left hand side when listed by dates. On my mirror site I never had an archive offering. To save space, tidy up, and still have archives easily available, I have changed the format to have just one letter for each month. If you check under archive now you just see something like "dnosajjmamfj". Each letter is a month and clicking on it will take you to the archive. A lot less space and hopefully easy to use. If you don't think so let me know. For your amusement check out: Make Your Own Software. If only the world worked this way. I'd love to make millions with this product. Skip at 6:03 AM |
