Skip at 5:56 AM For anyone who curled up with the Saturday Evening Post, check out what our neighbors were reading, the Saturn Evening Post! It's amazing how two artists on different planets can have such a similar style. After you catch up on your reading, find out your real value. I'm worth $2,867,024.73! How much are you worth? I always thought my value was $1.98 in body parts. Now I feel rich! If only that money was in the bank. Skip at 5:27 AM Just a quick and simple Happy Thanksgiving to all my American friends. Skip at 5:38 AM Circle Virtual CD creates a virtual CD-ROM drive on your Windows PC. This allows you to make images of your favorite CD-ROMs and use them without inserting a CD into a CD-ROM drive. Circle Virtual CD: 1) improves the speed at which you access data, 2) stops you from having to switch disks in and out of your CD-ROM drive. Use Circle Virtual CD to easily access your favorite games, favorite music or favorite software programs. Since Circle Virtual CD uses CircleScan(tm), nearly *any* CD can be imaged. Note: This software is not intended to be used to make illegal copies of software or to violate software license agreements. Images should only be made of software that you have a license for. Get Circle Virtual CD v1.02 Today! It is (my favorite word!) Free! Skip at 4:51 AM With a claimed 43,000 downloads and counting the Portable FireFox project at John Haller's site is moving to official status at Mozdev.org. If you haven't heard about it, Portable Firefox is a fully functional package of Firefox optimized for use on a USB key drive. You can take your personal version of FireFox to any PC with a USB port. It can also be run from ZIP drives, CDRW drives, flash RAM cards, etc. This is a great idea and if you have a USB key drive with 256K, why not give it a try. Skip at 5:30 AM If you want to start the weekend off right check out this list so fearfully exhaustive that there has to be something for everyone on it. Every fear and phobia you could ever want is here. Check it out and give yourself a name to use for your fear. If that is to scary for you to handle why not give your family and friends a new fear of their own. Go to RJL Software's site for all the pranks and gags you could ever want. Download them and give everyone involved a scare, and a laugh. Skip at 6:53 AM The XML Résumé Library is an XML and XSL based system for marking up, adding metadata to, and formatting résumés and curricula vitae. This looks like an interesting project hosted over at sourceforge.net for anyone thinking of creating or updating their resume. Skip at 5:16 AM Strong Bad got a virus, check it out for a great laugh. And don't forget the Homestarrunner store has lots of great stuff including the the NEW DVD! Now, if only I could get a commission. Skip at 10:46 AM Matthew Bush sent me an email yesterday promoting his site which examines the power of using popular music, something people already listen to, as a way for people to express their feelings. It includes examples of therapeutic messages in popular music as well as original music by Freudian Slip, a therapeutic rock band. He asked me to put the words above on my site because he noted that long ago I had blogged a piece about Netaddiction (the May 27th item if you click the link). I was amazed that anyone could find my archives, let alone read them. If you tried to Google this, I must be on, like, page 50 of the search. Now I checked out Matthew's site from curiosity and from what I saw I thought why not mention it? But I also thought that if Matthew took the time and effort to find my obscure little piece on addiction, maybe he has a problem!! Hopefully, a healthy addiction to promoting his web site but I'm still a little bit worried. Skip at 6:06 AM Everyone knows that FireFox 1.0 is out. It was officially released November 9th. All I can say is if you are not using FireFox get it. If you have a previous version upgrade. Let's make sure that IE suffers the fate it deserves. Firefox is getting a lot of attention and great reviews. Check out the FireFox Start Page at Google. Skip at 5:15 AM Another reason to NEVER click on a link in an email! A new computer virus is spreading rapidly via E-mail. The virus spreads when victims click on a Web link in a malicious E-mail message. There are several different versions of this virus, but they all appeal to your curiosity and urge you to click on a Web link to proceed. One version claims you have made a purchase using the PayPal electronic payment system. Since Monday 8 November, Sophos has seen an increase in activity by the Bofra family of worms (mistakenly identified as versions of the MyDoom worm by some anti-virus vendors) which use both email and a recently discovered Microsoft security vulnerability to spread. Read about it here at Sophos . Skip at 5:28 AM If you get annoyed by those splash screens that pop up check out Digi Tallis and pick up Splashkiller. This little app will let you hide those splash screens. This is very useful for those little tray apps you love, but don't have a "no splash screen" option. It also saves you from having to re-set the option when you install a new version of an app that does have the option. It warns that some splash screens won't be handled but so far all the apps I run are. Skip at 5:01 AM A couple of interesting maps, courtesy of Postini, who's in the business of trying to stop spam and virus email, claim to show the origins of spam, viruses and directory harvest attacks. It is interesting to look at the various hotspots where Postini claims all this bad internet activity originates. Skip at 5:02 AM I really got a laugh when I saw this picture of a redesigned North America at Not a Dollarshort: If you need another uplifting smile try Marry an American. There seems to be quite a few Canadians willing to help. Skip at 5:22 AM Just couldn't blog anything yesterday. Back today with an interesting product from Prevx.com. They have a FREE home edition of a product that is supposed to protect you in a different way then your traditional anti-virus products. Some ways includes: • Stoping ‘Buffer Overflow’ attacks used by Internet worms (such as Sasser) and hackers • Stoping the installation of malicious files • Stoping malicious modification of critical files and directories • Stoping frequently used attacks on Internet Explorer • Stoping unauthorized changes to critical areas of the registry • Stoping the covert modification of start-up scripts I have been running this for the last three days. It has prompted me on a couple of occasions, on things I knew was happening, and showed that it was working. They talk about 'Zero Day' protection to guard you in the period when a new virus is out and your signature files have not caught up. So far, this looks like a good program to have running in the background for some extra protection. Download it and see what you think. Skip at 4:45 AM I'm not into blogging about politics, but today I can't think of anything else. Here in Canada the election is just as important as it is in the US. A huge border, a huge trading partner, a huge influence on everything we do. I'll be watching TV today. The world is holding its breath. Skip at 6:02 AM An interesting app from Schooner.com might help anyone fed up with banner ads. Using this app to make a simple change to the configuration of your web browser, so that it avoids making connections to banner advertisement servers and avoids downloading ad images. If your browser can't connect to the advertisement server, it can't show you the ad image. The trick behind this is that it uses a mechanism already built into most recent browsers (IE, Netscape, Mozilla, and Opera) and available on most platforms (Windows, Mac, UNIX) and its free. There is a forum available to help you as well. Skip at 5:59 AM |
